Verified machine safety access at Koning Willem I College (KW1C)
by Sphereon
A student is trained on a high-risk workshop machine and receives a digital machine safety certificate. That same digital certificate lets the student book the machine online. Later, at the machine itself, the student holds their credential against the machine's reader. The same certificate is checked again, and only then does the physical lock release. Most digital identity projects stay online: a credential is shown, a screen confirms it, done. This case bridges the online world and the physical world with the same credential and the same EUDI and ISO standards. Only the physical check of the certificate at the machine decides whether it runs at all. The machine either starts, or it stays locked.

How it works
A student completes safety training for a high-risk machine. KW1C, using its Sphereon VDX business wallet, issues a machine safety certificate as an ISO 18013-5 mdoc to the student's personal wallet.
To reserve a machine, the student logs in with their SURF eduID, which confirms they are enrolled at KW1C, and presents the safety certificate online. VDX verifies it, and only a valid certificate allows the student to make a reservation via the business wallet.
At the reserved time, the student stands at the machine and holds the same credential against the reader. VDX verifies it again, now in person over NFC/BLE. No person checks it; the machine does.
On a successful check the existing Simac Pronto controller releases the physical lock. An unsuccessful check leaves the machine locked.
The innovation is the combination of digital and physical in one credential. The same certificate, issued once, is verified both ways: online when booking, and in person at the machine. Most digital identity stops at the screen. Here the digital reaches into the physical: it unlocks a real machine, or keeps it locked.

The FIDES Use Case Catalog aims to provide a clear and up-to-date overview of how verifiable credentials and digital wallets are used in the real world. While FIDES Labs BV does not assume responsibility or liability for the completeness, accuracy, or timeliness of the information presented, we have made a best effort to compile a representative overview. The data is aggregated from publicly available sources and from information published by the organisations themselves.
Add or update a use case:
- List your organization first (if it is not in the Organizations catalog).
- Then submit a use case or suggest an update to an existing use case.
Both flows require a FIDES Community account. Submissions are reviewed before publication.
