Urban Company: Service Professional and Customer Identity Verification
by Unique Identification Authority of India
Urban Company (Think Helpling, Taskrabbit, Bark etc) is one of Asia's leading technology platforms for 8.4 million users delivering home services, connecting customers with verified professionals across categories such as beauty, wellness, home cleaning, appliance repair, plumbing, electrical services, and home improvement. Urban Company uses the Aadhaar App to enable secure, consent-based identity verification for both service professionals and customers. Service professionals can instantly verify their identity during onboarding, periodic re-verification, or before undertaking services at customer premises. Using digitally signed verifiable credentials, the Aadhaar App enables users to share only the information necessary for the transaction, eliminating the need for physical identity documents. This reduces impersonation and fraud, streamlines onboarding and service delivery, enhances trust between professionals and customers, and provides a seamless, privacy-preserving verification experience. Urban Company has been live with Aadhaar App-based verification for the past three months and currently conducts approximately 50,000–75,000 verifications per month, with 60,590 transact

How it works
### How It Works
1. A service professional begins onboarding through the Urban Company Partner App.
2. As part of the onboarding journey, the Partner App initiates an identity verification request by invoking the Aadhaar App.
3. The Aadhaar App opens and prompts the professional for consent to share the required identity information.
4. Upon consent, the Aadhaar App securely retrieves the required Aadhaar-based verifiable credential from the wallet and generates a digitally signed presentation containing only the requested demographic attributes.
5. The Aadhaar App returns the signed identity response directly to the Urban Company Partner App, which verifies the credential cryptographically using UIDAI's trust framework.
6. Once verification is successful, the professional's identity is confirmed instantly, allowing the onboarding process to continue without requiring physical documents, manual data entry, or document uploads.
This seamless app-to-app interaction enables secure, privacy-preserving, and paperless onboarding while significantly reducing onboarding time and the risk of document fraud or impersonation.
