Trusted Caller Identity
by Dock Labs AG
Call centre authentication still relies on security questions and SMS OTPs, which can be stolen, spoofed or defeated by SIM swap. Customers must disclose personal data to agents who have no need to see it. Trusted Caller Identity replaces this with a verifiable credential. Telefónica issues a credential proving phone number ownership, secured by its Number Verify and SIM Swap network APIs. When a customer calls, the contact centre opens an encrypted DIDComm channel to their wallet and the customer confirms biometrically on their own device. Selective disclosure returns only a yes/no answer, so no personal data reaches the agent. Verification time reduces >4 times. Four organisations across telecoms, identity and standards built it: Telefónica Tech (issuer, network signals), Dock Labs/Truvera (credential infrastructure), TMT ID (identity data), GSMA (coordination). The customer holds the credential, the contact centre verifies it, and no party sits in the middle. It uses open verifiable credential and DIDComm standards, and Telefónica's network APIs sit within GSMA Open Gateway, so the model can scale to any operator rather than stay proprietary. How it works
Setup, once
1. Telefónica verifies the customer's number and device via its Number Verify and SIM Swap APIs, confirming control of the number and that no recent SIM change occurred.
2. It issues a verifiable credential proving phone number ownership.
3. The credential is delivered to the customer's wallet and stored on device, not in a central database. In production the wallet will sit inside the operator's existing app.
On the call
4. The customer calls; the agent or IVR triggers authentication.
5. The contact centre, as verifier, sends an encrypted DIDComm request straight to the customer's wallet.
6. The customer gets a push notification and approves biometrically on their own device. The biometric never leaves the phone.
7. The wallet returns a cryptographic proof. Selective disclosure means only a yes/no reaches the agent, no personal data.
8. The contact centre verifies against Telefónica's issuer key without contacting the operator, so the operator learns nothing about where the customer authenticates. Done in 15-20 seconds.

The FIDES Use Case Catalog aims to provide a clear and up-to-date overview of how verifiable credentials and digital wallets are used in the real world. While FIDES Labs BV does not assume responsibility or liability for the completeness, accuracy, or timeliness of the information presented, we have made a best effort to compile a representative overview. The data is aggregated from publicly available sources and from information published by the organisations themselves.
Add or update a use case:
- List your organization first (if it is not in the Organizations catalog).
- Then submit a use case or suggest an update to an existing use case.
Both flows require a FIDES Community account. Submissions are reviewed before publication.
