CEXA: reusable KYC for exchanges and banks, with the original issuer paid on every reuse
by Verana
Exchanges and banks run the same identity checks on the same customers, pay an IDV provider each time, and lose over half their sign-ups at the KYC wall. The Travel Rule adds a second redundancy: institutions must identify the counterparty behind every transfer, so each joins several directories and resubmits the same license. The Crypto Exchange Association (demo) is a runnable answer built on Verana: a trust ecosystem founded by exchanges, open to the banks that serve them. It governs one reusable credential, CEXA-Kyc, on both sides: only accredited members may issue it, and only accredited members may ask a wallet for it. Asking for KYC data is a privileged, paid act. When a member accepts another member's credential, the protocol routes the reuse fee to the institution that paid for the original check: the KYC file becomes an asset, and the customer opens an account in about a minute. A second credential, CEXA-VerifiedCounterparty, published on each member's DID and free to verify, replaces N Travel Rule directory subscriptions with one membership. The institutions are fictional. The infrastructure is not: run the full loop today with ten integrated open-source wallets.

How it works
1. The Association anchors its trust registry on Verana's Verifiable Public Registry: two schemas, a digest-anchored governance framework, and its fee schedule (fees are example values).
2. Members join through vetted, paid, renewable on-chain onboarding. Validated members receive their CEXA-VerifiedCounterparty credential. Members must already be Verifiable Services: the Association issues memberships, not identity.
3. The customer's first exchange runs one full IDV check, seals the evidence bundle into their wallet, digest-bound, and issues CEXA-Kyc for free.
4. On reuse, the wallet trust-resolves the requester and checks its VERIFIER accreditation before presenting. The verifier re-binds the person (passport NFC plus face match), receives the sealed evidence as its own CDD file, and pays the protocol-split fee: 0.90 to the original issuer, 0.10 to the Association. No phone home: the issuer never learns where the customer went
5. Travel Rule desks read the counterparty credential from the member's DID, free
6. Failures fail closed: a verifiable exchange outside the Association resolves TRUSTED and is still refused; a revoked credential dies at every member at the next check

The FIDES Use Case Catalog aims to provide a clear and up-to-date overview of how verifiable credentials and digital wallets are used in the real world. While FIDES Labs BV does not assume responsibility or liability for the completeness, accuracy, or timeliness of the information presented, we have made a best effort to compile a representative overview. The data is aggregated from publicly available sources and from information published by the organisations themselves.
Add or update a use case:
