ARIA: the trust handshake that lets any organisation verify an AI agent at its door
by Trustlayer Foundation
AI agents already buy, negotiate and file on behalf of organisations — and they cross the boundary of the company that built them. At the receiving end, almost nothing answers three questions in the moment an agent knocks: who is this, which legal entity is accountable for it, and is it still permitted to act? ARIA answers with a trust handshake. The agent declares its credential and its intent. The receiver evaluates both against a policy it published itself, in its own DNS, then admits or refuses with a defined response code — an auditable decision, never a silent drop. Verification runs locally at the receiver. The credential is an AID: a W3C Verifiable Credential naming the agent and the party accountable for it, signed with a post-quantum composite suite (ML-DSA-65 + Ed25519, both must verify). Revocation reaches verifiers in about sixty seconds via an append-only ledger. The standard is stewarded by a nonprofit, not a company. Spec CC-BY-4.0, code Apache 2.0, base level free permanently. Live since April 2026: 15 active AIDs across 5 organisations, published at api.aria.bar/v1/stats. Early numbers — infrastructure described at the moment before adoption, not after it.

How it works
1. An operator registers its agent with the ARIA Registry and names its Principal — the legal entity accountable for what that agent does.
2. The registry issues an AID: a W3C Verifiable Credential naming the agent, its Principal and its trust level, signed with a post-quantum composite suite. It is held by the operator's systems — the holder here is a machine, not a person.
3. The receiving organisation publishes its own ARIA Agent Trust Policy as a DNS TXT record on its domain: the minimum trust level it accepts, and its enforcement mode — monitor, warn or strict.
4. The agent arrives and DECLARES its credential and its intent.
5. The receiver EVALUATES both against the policy it published itself, verifying the signatures locally with the open-source verifier.
6. The receiver ADMITS or refuses, returning a defined response code — so a refusal is auditable and machine-readable, never a silent drop.
7. If the credential is later suspended or revoked, the event is written to an append-only ledger and reaches verifiers in about sixty seconds. The same agent knocking again is refused, at every door, without anyone being notified by hand.

The FIDES Use Case Catalog aims to provide a clear and up-to-date overview of how verifiable credentials and digital wallets are used in the real world. While FIDES Labs BV does not assume responsibility or liability for the completeness, accuracy, or timeliness of the information presented, we have made a best effort to compile a representative overview. The data is aggregated from publicly available sources and from information published by the organisations themselves.
Add or update a use case:
- List your organization first (if it is not in the Organizations catalog).
- Then submit a use case or suggest an update to an existing use case.
Both flows require a FIDES Community account. Submissions are reviewed before publication.
- Add use case
- Update use case — find your use case and submit changes
- Logged-in users can also use Suggest an update (pencil icon) in a detail view of a use case.
