Age verification as a service: wallet-native "over 18" for any platform, via an intermediary layer
by espuni
Online platforms must verify users are over 18 to comply with DSA Article 28 and national law — but the traditional route forces users to expose their identity to prove a single fact, and building a wallet-native verifier in-house is out of reach for most businesses. espuni is an independent intermediary layer that provides age verification as a service on top of EUDIPLO (OWF). Instead of each platform building and maintaining its own EUDI verifier, any service integrates once and lets espuni handle the wallet interaction, the trust-list validation, and the protocol complexity. The user presents a proof-of-age credential from their EUDI Wallet; espuni requests only the "over 18" attribute, validates the issuer against the EU Age Verification Trusted List, and returns a yes/no. No name, no birthdate, no document reaches the platform. Built on open standards (OID4VP, ISO 18013-7) and open source, it supports the Digital Credentials API with QR fallback, and works across EUDI wallets. The intermediary model is what makes wallet-native age verification realistic for the small and mid-sized businesses that can't build it themselves — a practical on-ramp to the EUDI ecosystem.

How it works
1 - A platform with an age-verification obligation (a shop, a streaming service, a gambling operator) integrates espuni once — a single integration instead of building an EUDI verifier from scratch.
2 - A user reaches age-restricted content. Instead of uploading a document, they're offered "Verify with your EUDI Wallet."
3 - espuni sends a presentation request for the age_over_18 attribute only — via the Digital Credentials API by default, but falling back to QR code if DC API is not available or rejected by the user.
4 - The user's EUDI Wallet shows exactly what's being requested — only "over 18," nothing else — and the user approves.
espuni receives the response, validates the issuer against the EU Age Verification Trusted List, and verifies the proof.
5 - The platform receives a verified yes/no. It never sees the user's identity, and the wallet interaction, trust validation, and protocol handling all happened in the intermediary layer — invisible to both the platform and the user.
The platform gets compliance without building or maintaining identity infrastructure; the user proves age without exposing identity; the exchange leaves an auditable cryptographic record.

The FIDES Use Case Catalog aims to provide a clear and up-to-date overview of how verifiable credentials and digital wallets are used in the real world. While FIDES Labs BV does not assume responsibility or liability for the completeness, accuracy, or timeliness of the information presented, we have made a best effort to compile a representative overview. The data is aggregated from publicly available sources and from information published by the organisations themselves.
Add or update a use case:
- List your organization first (if it is not in the Organizations catalog).
- Then submit a use case or suggest an update to an existing use case.
Both flows require a FIDES Community account. Submissions are reviewed before publication.
