Interop Profiles
Interoperability profiles are essential to make open standards work in practice: ensuring wallets, issuers, and verifiers can truly work together.
Why Interop Profiles Matter
Open standards like OpenID4VC, OID4VP, and the W3C Verifiable Credentials Data Model form the foundation of open ecosystems. But these standards alone do not guarantee interoperability. Each standard includes options, and if implementations make different choices, they may still end up incompatible.
In real-world ecosystems and community tracks, this becomes a critical challenge. If you want multiple personal and organizational wallets to support the same use cases, without depending on a single vendor, you need clear, shared technical agreements.
That’s what interoperability profiles are for. They define a concrete, testable set of rules on top of open standards, so that different solutions can reliably work together in a shared environment.
The FIDES Community does not promote a single interoperability profile. What matters is clarity and comparability. By maintaining a shared overview of key profiles, we aim to help wallet providers, verifiers, and ecosystem coordinators:
- Understand the differences and overlaps between profiles
- Check which wallets support which profiles
- Choose the right profile(s) for their own use cases
Key Interoperability Profiles
HAIP
High Assurance Interop Profile
Interop profile for high-assurance credential flows. Maintained by the OpenID Foundation. Expected to be adopted in the EUDI Wallet architecture. Designed for digital credentials representing natural persons, not organizations or things.
DIIP
Decentralized Identity Interop Profile
Community-initiated profile co-developed with wallet providers, evolving alongside open standards. Uses W3C DID and VCDM, suitable for credentials related to organizations, digital product passports, data spaces, and open badges.
EWC
European Wallet Consortium
Developed during the European Wallet Consortium’s Large Scale Pilot, now concluded.
Aligns with the EUDI Wallet architecture and supports credential flows for natural persons, using both DIDs and X.509 certificates.
Designed to balance decentralization with integration into existing EU trust infrastructures.
Swiyu
Swiss e‑ID
Part of Switzerland’s national e-ID infrastructure (Swiyu), this profile combines OID4VCI, OID4VP, and SD-JWT VC with the new did:webvh DID method.
Who Implements What
Use the wallet catalogs to compare implementation status across organizational and personal wallets. Each wallet shows support for DIIP v4/v5, HAIP and EWC v3 where applicable.
