Community Track Sustainable Cities

Accelerate the adoption of interoperable digital-trust solutions around the globe.

The Sustainable Cities Global Interop Track focuses on real-world use cases where municipalities, conformity assessment bodies, solution providers, and others collaborate on demonstrating interoperable digital wallet and credential solutions. The track includes a set of use cases, credentials, a shared interoperability profile, participating wallet providers, and a neutral track coordinator. Community Tracks are designed to evolve over time with new use cases and partners, providing a step-by-step journey into the development and adoption of wallets and verifiable credentials.

What is the track?

The Sustainable Cities Track is a permanent FIDES Community Track supported by the FIDES Open Sandbox. Municipalities, conformity-assessment bodies, wallet providers and others jointly demonstrate how interoperable solutions already work today—built on the DIIP v4 profile and open standards such as OID4VCI/VP and SD-JWT VC.

During GDC25 we will showcase the first milestone with live demos of complete credential flows, and we warmly invite additional cities from other countries to plug in.

Who should jump in?

If you care about making city services smarter, greener and instantly trustworthy, this track has a seat for you. We’re calling on:

  • Cities & municipalities: pilot next-generation resident and business services without heavy back-end re-engineering.

  • Certification & conformity-assessment bodies: issue your ISO, ESG or fair-trade proofs once and watch them flow seamlessly across borders and cases.

  • PID / eID issuers & identity providers: plug your foundational IDs into real-world use cases and prove cross-wallet interoperability.

  • Business registries & chambers of commerce: provide official company data as verifiable credentials, so municipalities can confirm supplier details in seconds.

  • Universities, colleges & skills platforms: issue diplomas and course certificates that employers and cities can verify on the spot.

  • City suppliers & contractors: showcase your compliance credentials upfront and fast-track tender onboarding.

  • Wallet & trust-service providers: stress-test your solution in a live, multi-vendor sandbox and demo it on the GDC stage.

Bring your expertise, plug into our open sandbox and help cities everywhere unlock digital trust that actually scales. All participants will have their organisation information automatically listed in the FIDES Blue Pages

The following use cases are available in the Sustainable City Track:

Foundational ID enrolment

At first touchpoint with the city or identity provider a resident receives a Personal ID (PID/vPID) straight into a mobile wallet, creating a cryptographically verifiable root identity other credentials can build on.

Supplier onboarding

When bidding for public tenders, companies share ISO 14001 or business-registry credentials from their organisational wallet; the city’s verifier portal checks authenticity in seconds, slashing paperwork and audit overhead.

Vacancies

Applicants present verified diplomas, skills badges and background-check credentials via their wallet, letting HR trust the data source instantly and accelerate short-listing and contract signing.

The community can easily add further use cases as the track evolves.

Employee onboarding

After hiring, the municipality issues a “Verified Employee” credential to the newcomer’s wallet, which can unlock internal apps, facility access and partner services without repetitive KYC steps.

Who brings what?

  • Issuers: Verifiable credentials (eID, ISO 14001, diplomas, ESG labels, …)

  • Personal-wallet providers: Mobile wallet for residents

  • Organisational-wallet providers: Cloud wallet to hold, issue and verify credentials

  • Cities & enterprises (verifiers): Webportal to check credentials in live processes

  • Business registries / chambers: Company-data credentials

  • Certification bodies: Conformity certificates as credentials

  • Education & skills providers: Diplomas and skill badges as credentials

  • Track coordinator (FIDES Labs): Neutral facilitation, testbed & tooling

All participants align with the DIIP v4 profile, use the track’s credential schemas and provide a basic SLA.

FIDES is an international movement dedicated to the continuous improvement of digital trust on the internet.

Community Tracks are thematic programs and focus on a specific domain, region or target group (e.g. cities, universities, trade) and bring together use cases, credentials, wallets, and verifiers to develop and test real-world trust scenarios.
